5 Tips On Accepting An Award!

“It is not good to eat too much honey, nor does it bring you honor to brag about yourself” (Proverbs 25:27)*

Honey has a long history and it is used in many cultures. “Eva Crane's, The Archaeology of Beekeeping, states that humans began hunting for honey at least 10,000 years ago” (Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia). Honey tastes good, it’s nutritious, does not spoil easily, helps the healing of the colon and the throat, is a great sweetener and, good for baking and cooking purposes. Many religions speak well about honey: the Bible and the Qumran. It also plays an important role in a Buddhist festival. Honey is good so long as we do not eat too much of it. It will make us fat and sick.

What we say about honey may also apply to honor: “It is good but too much will make our head fat and our egos sick”. Honor is a “high respect, as that shown for special merit”. We are told in the Bible to “honor” our parents, leaders, and anyone that merits honor. Giving honor to someone is wonderful. It means that the person receiving honor has done a good thing for another person, an organization, a City, a Nation or the World. Recently President Barack Obama was greatly honored having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Let me share with you five tips on how to accept an award.

1. Be Thankful For The Honor
One of the best things we can do in life is to say ‘thank you’. If you are being honored, the proper response is to be grateful and to express it verbally. Don’t assume that the person knows you are grateful, be explicit about it. To act like it is not important to be honored is to imply that what you did was not an honorable thing. Go ahead and communicate by all possible means that you are thankful!

2. Share The Honor
In life we are mentored, helped and are successful because others played a role in our lives. If someone would not have built the car you drive, sold it to you and performed the maintenance on it, you would not have a car. You either purchased it or leased it, but others played a role in your car. The respectable response should be to give honor to those that helped you receive honor.

3. Benefit From The Honor
There is nothing wrong in benefiting from the honor. I believe that proper benefits would be used on behalf of people, an organization, a City, a Nation or even the World. If there is publicity, power, funds or prestige from the honor you will receive, then by-all-means utilize it for the common good; certainly not for your self-seeking financial gain, glory or power.

4. Be Humble For The Honor
Humility is being modest, avoiding arrogance and self-importance. True, you are being recognized by your peers and others, and it is justified to feel good and “properly proud” of your accomplishments. To be humble does NOT mean you need to look like you are depressed. Be kind with others and unassuming, people will respect you and honor you even more.

5. Seek Good Not The Glory
As I said at the beginning, being honored is a good thing. Glory, meaning praise and admiration, may be wonderful as long as you do not seek it. If glory finds you, then it was because you have sought to do well. Seek the good of humanity, to serve, to be a blessing to others and glory will follow you. But if you ever seek glory first, eventually it will consume you and turn you into an egocentric, self-seeking human. Anyone that their focus is seeking glory is in danger to himself and to society. The Bible says: “Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12)*. As you seek to do good in this world, may your peers honor you and may God grant you a spirit of humility for His glory!

5. Busque El Servir No La Gloria
