How to cope with death: Hollywood and our Pop Icons? / ¿Cómo hacerle frente a la muerte: Hollywood y nuestros Ídolos Pop?

Michael Jackson [50], Farrah Fawcett [62], Ed McMahon [86], David Carradine [72], Billy Mays [50] (King of Infomercials), Sky Jackson [63] (Band Member of The Seed), Johnny Palermo [27], Exodus Tyson [4] (daughter of Mike Tyson), RIP!

These are just a few Hollywood’s Stars, the Rich and Famous and the Pop Icons of the world, that have recently passed away. My condolences to their family and friends: May God grant them the strength to heal and move on in life. We have seen how thousands of people have demonstrated their support and grief for Michael Jackson: some have cried publicly, some have danced and sang, some have created altars, some have lit candles in quiet meditations, and others have made banners and drawings.

The famous Scholar, Priest and Father of the Christian Reformation, Martin Luther said: “Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying.” (1483-1546). It is true that we must all do these two things, and I would add we must also do our own grieving.

Psychiatrists tell us that we may experience a cycle from shock, denial, anger, bargaining, grieving, and finally acceptance. They also found that: some people suffer endless grief, others do not demonstrate their suffering, those who subdued (not denied), grief were psychologically and physically healthier 6-14 months after their loss than others who grieved more. We also know that men and women grieve a bit differently: while women talk and cry, men think and act. Other research indicates people that relied on religion to cope are generally better able to grieve than those who did not rely on religion.

As a reverend, I am called to be involved during people’s grieving moments. I have officiated many funeral and burial services of family, friends, parishioners and strangers. I have had the painful honor to officiate services from the very young to the very old; among the most difficult have been services for my father, my brother, my nephew, uncles and aunts, my wife’s grandparents and other family members. I know how painful it is to cope with the death of a loved one.

I can honestly say that for the most part our faith in God helps us to cope and grieve better. The Bible says: “But Christ has truly been raised from the dead—the first one and proof that those who sleep in death will also be raised” (1 Corinthians 15:20)*. This is what I believe about God: He loves humanity and can empathize with us, having experienced the death of His son. I also believe that death is not the end but the continuity of life in another realm. One day God will fulfill our desire – immortality: no more pain, suffering, tears and death. I can face today’s pain, knowing that the future with God will be painless!

As you grieve the death of your own family member, friend, Hollywood Stars, the Rich and Famous and the Pop Icons of the world, you may like to share your grief with a friend or take time to be by yourself. On the other hand, you may want to enjoy a fun time with friends or a nice vacation. May I also suggest you invite God into your grieving process. Tell God just how you feel, ask Him to help you, place your faith in the One that conquered death. Finally, believe that one day, death will be no more!

In light of Father Cutié and Reverend Moya: Can you trust the clergy?

In light of the scandal with Rev. Tommy Moya and Father Alberto Cutié, some feel betrayed by the clergy and some feel that they can’t trust us anymore. In case you have not heard, let me bring you up-to-date on Rev. Moya and Father Cutié. Both are well known clergy. The former is a Christian from a non-Roman Catholic denomination and the latter, a Roman Catholic Christian. Rev. Moya admitted to an extra-marital relationship and Father Cutié to a pre-marital relationship while holding a vow of celibacy. There has been a wide range of reactions and opinions concerning both of these men. I would like to focus on the issue of “trust”. There are people who feel backstabbed by those of us who preach the Gospel. Part of my job, being a Reverend myself, is to hear others express what is in their heart, which includes: complaints, frustrations and opinions. A few of the complaints I have heard are: “they preached one thing and acted differently,” “they asked us to obey God while they were disobeying,” and, “I always believed all clergy are hypocrites.”

The question is: Can you trust the clergy? Before I answer, I want you to know that I don’t work as a public relations representative for either of these men or their respective organizations and, I am not justifying what my fellow clergy did. The answer is: YES, you can have “imperfect trust” in us. I heard someone say: “the problem with live heroes is that they are alive”. While alive any hero can become a foe. We have seen “sinful acts” in every realm of life: in politics, in business, in the police force, in the medical world, in our work place, in our family and, in ourselves. We have seen those we trust blow it.
But most of us have not lost trust in any of those realms, including ourselves. Clergy are part of humanity; we have the same “virus” the Bible calls “sin”. The Bible says: “Everyone has sinned” (Romans 3:23) and “sin” has consequences. When the clergy is caught sinning there are consequences. In some cases our justice system needs to act, for example: in cases of child abuse and theft. But in other cases, the consequences may be: loosing a job, ministry, reputation, family and more.

Honestly, it seems to me that when a clergy is caught in a sin, all the good things he or she has done to serve people, the community and God, are quickly forgotten. No one speaks about the wise words Mr. Clergy or Ms. Clergy shared with “James”, when he needed guidance. Who mentions the late visit to “Grandma Mary” when she was sick? Does anyone mention their work to help the poor and the powerless? It suddenly seems that to have trusted a “fallen clergy” is almost a sin in itself! The whole Christian community honors the Apostle Peter. When no one was willing to walk on water, Peter stepped out and walked. When Jesus mentioned his death, Peter was the first to express his willingness to die defending Jesus. But Peter had our “virus”, he betrayed Jesus. Thank God Jesus forgave him, encouraged him to overcome his failures and, continue with the calling given him. Jesus trusted in Peter again!

I believe we should model this attitude, clergy like Rev. Moya and Father Cutié have demonstrated a track record of service, commitment to God and people and, they deserve our trust. Let’s go back to the term I previously used, “imperfect trust”. This is the kind of trust that says: “you have demonstrated a good track record and have been a wise servant, I trust you; but I know you are not perfect”. It is imperfect because we are all imperfect. Only God deserves perfect trust. He will never lie, let us down, or act contradictorily to His character and word. All of us should strive to be the best we can be and manage our sinful nature the best we can, with God’s help. May God continue to bless Rev. Moya and Father Cutié and, may one day, all those who feel betrayed by them, trust them again.

Herd Mentality & 7 Principles of Decision Making! / ¡Mentalidad de Rebaño & Principios para Tomar Decisiones!

“If you want to build a tower, you first sit down and decide how much it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job” Luke 14:28*

“The term herd mentality is derived from the word "herd,” meaning group of animals, and “mentality,” implying a certain frame of mind. However, the most succinct definition would be: how large numbers of people act in the same ways at the same times. Herd mentality describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items.” (Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia).

The herd mentality may not be a bad thing if we make the right decision. However, if we make a decision solely based on what others have decided, we may not be making the BEST choice. The following are 7 principles on how to make your own decisions.

#1 Write down all the different possible choices you have.

#2 Perform a theoretical research. Research as much as you can about each of the choices you have selected. The Internet has plenty of free information available.

#3 Perform a practical research. Give it a “test-drive”. If you are making a purchase, try it first. If it’s a career choice, meet some people in that particular field. If it is love related, ask someone that knows the person of interest to you.

#4 Pros and Cons. After you have done your theoretical and practical research, write down the pro and cons on each of the choices and select the BEST choice.

#5 A second opinion. Ask a friend for his or her opinion; be willing to hear his or her perspective. Ask God to guide you and sleep over it.

#6 It’s time to decide – DECIDE! Now “own it”. You will need to live with the choice you have made. Hopefully you have made the BEST choice.

#7 Oh my God! “This was NOT the BEST choice”. If you made a mistake try to fix it. If you can’t fix it, live with it and learn from it. There is life after an incorrect decision. I must confess I have made my fair share of decisions that have NOT turned out to be the BEST choice.

“Times Flies”, 4 Tips on time management.

“I will not go yet to this feast, because the right time for me has not yet come" (John 7:8)*

Jesus was invited to a celebration but he said it was not the right time for him to go. Each one of us makes daily choices on the use of our time, “is this on my schedule or should it be on my schedule?” For many of us, time does seem to fly. All of us have a variety of things to do and we need to make time for each of them, for example: family, work, household chores, after school or after work activities, social events and much more. Here are a few ideas that may help you invest your time wisely.

1) It is 24X7 for everyone.
Please stop saying, “If I could only have 25 hours or 30 hours a day”. As humans we have different economic levels, abilities, talents, mental capacity, etc. But all of us have 24 hours a day. Work with God’s 24 hour schedule, He knows what is best for us.

2) Holy Time!
The proper use of our time is a blessed thing – a proper use of a gift from above. “These are evil times, so make every minute count” (Ephesians 5:16) CEV. When we receive a precious gift the proper response is to take care of it. Since God has given us the gift of time, let’s invest it properly and make every minute count.

3) Is this a level 1, 2, 3 or 4 decision?
When faced with a time decision, determine if you need to do it ‘right now’ or ‘later’. See the levels 1-4 as a guide to ‘do it now’ or ‘do it later’:

Level 1 is Urgent and Important = do it right now!
Level 2 is Important but not Urgent = do it, but not right now.
Level 3 is Urgent but not Important = as soon as you have some time.
Level 4 is not Urgent and not Important = whenever.

4) Everything has its own time.
“Everything on earth has its own time and its own season” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)* Wise words from a time management genius, King Solomon. Have you noticed people that talk about work at the gym and about the gym at work? Would it not be better to talk about work at work and about the gym at the gym? This is what King Solomon expressed; there is a right time for everything in life. As we make daily decisions with our time, may God give us wisdom to use our time wisely. May we enjoy the benefits of having made the right investment of our time.

8 Principles Related to the Economy / 8 Principios Relativos a la Economía

“The lazy will not get what they want, but those who work hard will” (Proverbs 13:4)*

In the last year our economy and most of the world’s economy has suffered an economic downturn. Unfortunately many have lost jobs, investments and, their savings. If you still have your job you can say, “Praise the Lord!” We are seeing small signs that our economy is beginning to pick up; but, more than ever, we need to use our finances very wisely and be the best employee possible. Here are eight simple and practical principles that you may implement to succeed during this present economic cycle:

1) Reduce unnecessary expenses.
Before you spend a penny, ask yourself: “Do I need to purchase this? Can I really afford it? Is this a need or a want?” We all know that the key to having money is ‘not how much I make’ but ‘how well I manage my money’. During a difficult economic period we need to cut back on unnecessary expenses.

2) Reduce your credit card debts & make payments on time.
Interest paid to credit card companies is probably the highest rate you pay on any debt. Try to pay your credit card debts as soon as possible. If you have difficulties controlling the use of credit cards, destroy all or most of them. Make sure you make all your payments on time; especially necessary items such as, rent, utilities and car payments.

3) Bankrupt? Reach an agreement ASAP with your debtor.
If you can’t pay your debts contact your debtors ASAP; before your debt goes to a collection company. Try to reach a settlement with your debtors. Most companies are willing to negotiate the amount of debt and the payments. Always make your car payment: you do not want to wake up in the morning and find it has been repossessed.

4) Be the best employee at your job.
Remember you are working for someone that expects you to do your job well. You are either an asset or a liability to your employer– the latter can get you fired or demoted. Go to work daily seeking to be the best employee possible.

5) Seek a better job without leaving your current job.
Continue to seek better job opportunities without leaving your current job. Once you find another job opportunity, investigate the benefits, the company’s financial security and, of course, the salary.

6) Seek additional income, but do not take dangerous risks.
If you have the time, seek to increase your income by taking on a part-time job or starting a small business on the side. Do not make dangerous investments with companies that promise you fast and easy money by investing in them.

7) Have credit available in case of emergency.
Be ready in case you have an emergency. Keep a “clean credit card” and, if you own a property, have an available line of credit.

8) Have a positive spirit.
Be thankful for your job and ask God to bless you as you go on to fulfill your responsibilities in life. Remember: “ask and you will receive.”

*New Century Bible
