Good Relationships @ Your Job!

“The best that people can do is eat, drink, and enjoy their work" (Ecclesiastes 2:24)*

I would venture to say that most of us spend as much time at work as we do at home. As our “second home”, work has its problems and, some of the problems are related to relationships with our partners and coworkers. How can we preserve good working relationships at work? Let me give you 6 secrets:

#1 Communicate
As with any relationship: marriage, dating, parenting, etc, we need to communicate. You need to share any information concerning work, schedules, goals, problems, projects and protocols. I suggest that you communicate every way possible: face to face, email, text, phone calls, fax and notes.

#2 Be a team player
Be the best you can be at work but also be the best team player you can be! As with most things in life, we depend on the success of others. If your partners and coworkers do well, you will be playing for a winning team. Give others credit when they do well, encourage them to be the best, share defeats and victories.

#3 Respect their space
Work places are like homes; just as in any family you will find those that are very neat and organized and those that are not. Let us not assume that organization equals success. Some people can purposely leave some thing disorganized because they are investing their time in other things. The same is true for those that work best keeping all things organized.

#4 My time is not your time
Some of us like to complete our tasks immediately, others like to leave it for the last minute. Some people work at their optimum level early in the morning, others mid-day and others later during the day. The bottom line is to get the job done!

#5 Be responsible
Work is work; you are there to fulfill your duty to your clients, employer, partners and coworkers. Get the job done! You must be willing to carry the load and fulfill your responsibilities. Don’t slack off, accomplish your work to your full potential in order to gain everyone’s respect.

#6 Be of good spirit at work
I know everyone has problems and there are difficult days. However, not everyday is difficult. No one enjoys working with someone that is always grumpy, complaining and very negative. Go to work with a thankful attitude, courteous, respectful and fun! A good attitude is contagious and promotes a good spirit at work.

Work is not a “judgment from God”; otherwise God Himself would not be working on a daily basis. The Bible says: “For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (Philippians 2:13)**. See work as a “blessing from God” and do your best to keep a good working relationship with others at work. Most likely you spend 40+ hours a week working, you may as well enjoy your time while doing it.

Peace is better than War!

“Do your best to live in peace with everyone” (Romans 12:18)*

Our family, our community, our City, our State, our Nation, our Continent and our World is in need of greater peace. What is peace? Peace is the absence of war or hostilities. It is freedom from quarrel and disagreement. It is a condition of harmony and serenity.

The Bible verse quoted tells us to do our “best to live in peace”. God is asking you and me to do “our best” to live free from quarrels and disagreements. I know that being at peace with everyone all the time is impossible. Most of us have difficulty living in total peace with ourselves; imagine living in harmony and serenity with everyone else! Considering the difficulties of being at peace with everyone, let me give you seven secrets that will facilitate peace:

#1 Allow others to speak while you listen attentively.
I know that listening is not easy; many of us are too busy thinking on how to respond to actually listen attentively as the other person speaks. Be quite, repeat to yourself what the other person is saying and wait until they finish.

#2 Tell others your perspective in a clear and concise manner.
As someone that has been professionally trained, that speaks in public and in private, I can assure you that communication is one of the most difficult things we do as humans. Sometimes we can speak in such a complicated manner and be so long winded that we: a) lose the person, b) bore the person, c) confuse the person. Be clear and concise when you speak.

#3 When in doubt, give others the benefit of the doubt.
It happens to all of us: we assume, we act and hostility begins. Have you noticed how often wars between nations begin based on assumptions? It happens on a personal basis also. When you are not sure, give the person the benefit of the doubt.

#4 Allow for some disagreement with others.
If you believe you have all the truth, you are deceiving yourself. We are not going to see all matters with the same perspective, and some disagreement needs to be allowed. Sometimes in life not all things are as “black and white” as we may want to believe.

#5 Be respectful of others.
If you want to get someone on the defensive, be disrespectful. But if you want to gain leverage, be courteous and respectful. You may end-up being friends!

#6 Most of the time, a compromise is better than a war.
Most of us love to win, losing is disgraceful and compromising is like being asked to enjoy a rainy day on a long weekend. Remember that a rainy day on a long weekend is still a long weekend – you still win. Be willing to reach a compromise, it is better than beginning a war.

#7 Forgive others for the “sins” you believe they have committed against you.
Lastly, since all of us sin, forgiveness should be part of our daily lives. I have on numerous occasions asked for forgiveness and granted forgiveness to others. Living with guilt or bitterness will place such an emotional burden on us and others that it may lead to worst things in life.

Let me encourage you to be proactive in seeking to live in peace with everyone. We will not make everyone happy, we will not agree with everyone all the time. But pursuing peace with others is one of the greatest contributions we can give to our world and to ourselves. The Bible tells us: “Peace of mind means a healthy body, but jealousy will rot your bones” (Proverbs 14:30)*

Numerosas veces yo he pedido perdón y he concedido el perdón a otros.

A Few Friends Forever

“Jonathan said to David, "Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the LORD, saying, 'The LORD is witness between you and me” (1 Samuel 20:42)*

In life, one of the best things we all have or wish we had are friends – true friends. I know most of us use the word “friend” to refer to people we have known for a brief or a lengthy time; but true friends, those we can count on and that can count on us, are very limited. The reality is that making and keeping friends forever takes commitment: like any good relationship, it is a two-way street. Those that seek to have friends for the sole purpose of having their needs met, are like those that seek what a male or female prostitute provides – an illicit and self-indulgent moment.

A friendship that lasts forever is a worthwhile and profound human experience. Like anything good, it takes a bit of work to discover and sustain. Let me share seven helpful tips on how to discover and sustain a true friendship.

#1 Be Attractive
When you click, you click. There must be a mutual attraction, you must hit it off. Why befriend someone you really don’t like? When the chemistry is there act-on-it and begin that friendship!

#2 Be Yourself
A real friend will like you just the way you are. Being yourself and allowing others to be themselves is a liberating experience, one that you enjoy doing only with real friends.

#3 Be Available
A friend is there when you need him or her and they should expect the same from you. We have family, work and other commitments which are important to keep. However, friends need to be readily available for each other.

#4 Be Honest
Friends need to share honestly. If you inquire about a subject, say just how you feel. Whenever there is an issue that needs to be addressed, say what is in your heart.

#5 Be Together
Spend time together on a regular basis. What is the purpose of having a friend if you don’t get together? If your friends live at a distance, use cells phones, text messages, emails, and webcam to stay in touch.

#6 Be Interactive
Like most things in life, friendship should not be one way. When it comes to communicating, make sure it is a dialogue and not a monologue. When it comes to sharing, give and receive. When it comes to time, both must be willing to plan and execute. When the need arises to express affection, let it also be mutual.

#7 Be Unselfish
When we have something we like, we normally want it for ourselves. Allow your friends to have other good friends and afford yourself this same privilege. It may be a win-win situation; expanding your true friendship basis.
I believe all of us want people we can relate to, have fun with, find comfort in, communicate truth with; these are our true friends. The Bible tells us: “One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24)*. Bad friends can ruin us, but good friends stick closer than a brother. Good friendships can be a powerful force, a life changing experience, an everlasting bond. Let us seek to have and be a true friend, to a few!

Unos Pocos Amigos Eternos

Enjoying Life to the Outmost!

“The best that people can do is eat, drink, and enjoy their work. I saw that even this comes from God, because no one can eat or enjoy life without him” (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25)*

In light of today’s event – Michael Jackson’s Final Farewell, we understand that the world has lost an incredible talented artist. His life was full of controversies: a boy that became an adult and then became a boy, a black man that became white, a very wealthy man that almost became bankrupt, and a man that loved children but was accused of molesting children. In a way most of us would ask ourselves, “Did Michael Jackson enjoy his life? If he had to choose again, what would he have changed?”

When we are young, it seems that life is forever. As we get older, we know that life is short. How can we enjoy life to the fullest? Let me share a few ideas that will hopefully shed some light on the enjoyment of life:

Work & Rest
As the writer of Ecclesiastes pointed out, we should enjoy our work. Most of us spend a good amount of time doing it. Some people go to work as if they were going to get a tooth filled but without anesthesia; while others go to work as if they were going to enjoy a nice weekend in Disney World. Rest is also a God-ordained action. Our minds and bodies need to recharge and heal. Some people think about rest while at work and work while resting; it doesn’t make any sense to me. Enjoy your work and enjoy your rest!

Together & Alone
The majority of us need our time with friends and family: the love, the memories, the hugs and kisses. Who does not have good memories of celebrating Thanksgiving, Christmas and birthdays with family and friends? Yet we all need our time alone, time when we do not want to see a soul anywhere near us. We want to be quiet, perhaps sleep, read, watch TV, play on the computer or go to a secluded beach and just watch the sea and enjoy the breeze. Times together and alone are basic needs in order to enjoy our life to the utmost.

Healthy & Indulge
Eat healthy, organic, natural, low-fat, and low-sugar foods, exercise, and do not smoke or drink alcohol. We are constantly being reminded of those things that are good for our body. But, Lord, I need my daily piece of chocolate and on the weekend, I love potato chips, rum and cigars! We should live healthy lives and take care of ourselves but a bit of well-managed indulgence is not going to kill anyone. God, how boring life would be if we did not have bit of well-managed indulgence.

Receiving & Giving
Since the moment we are conceived in our mother’s womb we become receivers. After birth, our parents or guardians give us what we need. Eventually, it is our turn to do the same for the next generation and we become more of a giver than a receiver. As we age, once again we become somewhat dependant and in need of receiving. In life, strive to be both a receiver and a giver! Whenever it is your turn to receive from others, do it with honor, humility and gratitude. Whenever it is your turn to give, do it willingly and thankful for the privilege of sharing and, do it with a smile.

Godly & Ungodly
You know that I would eventually share something else about God, it is my calling. Some people see God as a distant being that can’t relate to humans; others as an evil Creator that has placed us here to work-it-out the best we can without any Divine intervention; yet others see God as the Bible says: “Our Father”. Be godly, be someone that believes in God and seeks His truth wherever it is found – even in the Bible. By ungodly, I am not suggesting that we should seek to act evil but instead to accept the evil that is within us – our sinful nature. All of us make wrong decisions in life, but accept them, ask God for forgiveness, forgive yourself, learn the lesson and move on in life. Living with guilt does not make living enjoyable.

We can’t change the past but we can live to the outmost from now on. Live today as it was your last day: “People ought to enjoy every day of their lives, no matter how long they live” (Ecclesiastes 11:8)*

Freedom & Happy 233rd B-Day USA!

“The Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Happy 233rd B-Day United States of America! I don’t know if my patriotisms is on the rise thanks to my age or to CNN. I arrived in this country as a young boy 10 years old. Almost 42 years has passed since the day I flew from Cuba to Miami and I have come to consider the USA my country.

Through CNN and other networks we have recently seen the struggle in Iran. How those precious people protested the outcome of their election, how the young and the old, male and female, risked their lives to try to bring changes, seeking greater freedom from their current government. We saw the coup in Honduras, as ex-president Manuel Zelaya was accused of speaking and acting against the Constitution of Honduras. Now we see a Honduras divided with chaos on the streets; only God knows what will be the final outcome of this. I think of countries like North Korea, China and Cuba where the government oppresses its own people and I say to myself: “God, I love the USA!” I have often said it in private but today I am saying it in public: “the closest human thing to the Devil is any form of government that robs its people of their God given freedom.”

There are many other nations around the world where there is freedom, where there is peace, where the power is in the hands of the people, where their vote counts and they are free. Not seeking to brag or to make my nation as better than others, I reminisce of the wisdom of our founding Fathers as they drafted the Constitution of the United States of America. In just the First Amendment we have: Freedom of Religion, Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the Press, Freedom of Assembly and Freedom of Petition. If you have not recently paused to think of ALL these Freedoms we have in the First Amendment alone, please do so. We have been given the right to believe or not, the right to express and write as one so chooses and, the right to meet and make a petition, without violating our laws.

I have not visited Cuba since I left in 1968 but, María, my wife, did a few years ago. It was a family visit; she accompanied her aged mother to see her uncle. Having lived in and visited poor countries, we have seen poverty. However, the greatest negative impact was “the lack of freedom”. Cuba is a nation where everything seems to be illegal. She tells me the story that while visiting with her uncle, all of a sudden, she was informed of the bad news; government agents were coming to arrest those that were selling illegal home baked items. One of the suspects; an elderly grandmother that baked cookies to sell to children in order to make a few pennies. Some other suspects; a couple of 15 years old girls baking a cake and selling pieces of that cake. What a pity! What a shame! What extreme oppression!

May our prayer be: God, thank you for Freedom, thank you for my Country and for all other countries around the world where Freedom reigns. God is the Ultimate Creator and Seeker of freedom: “We have freedom now, because Christ made us free” (Galatians 5:1).
