Be a Good Driver!

“Show proper respect to everyone” (1 Peter 2:17)*

You may be a privileged person if you can depend on public transportation: it is less expensive, it may be faster due to unforeseen traffic delays, and it can provide you the time to work on things you need to do, perhaps take a nap, socialize, read a book, read the newspaper to catch up on current events, listen to music or simply relax until you reach your destination. If you depend on using your vehicle, it may be an enjoyable experience but it has its difficulties and dangers.

I would not mind having a better public transportation system but I also enjoy driving. Honestly, I am a fast but safe driver. I have been driving for 34 years and have had only one accident and a few tickets. I make some passengers a bit uncomfortable when I drive, but I try to be courteous with those I share the road with on a daily basis. Let’s remind ourselves about 6 basic principles of a good driver.

#1 Be 100% Alert

The goal of driving is reaching your destination safely. You want to get there without getting into an accident and without receiving a traffic ticket. You must be alert all the time; this will keep you from hitting another vehicle and possibly being struck by someone else. Since most of us speed, even a little, do understand that you are taking a risk; you may cause an accident and/or get a ticket. Avoid excessive speeding!

#2 Pedestrians Are First

People are first! If they are walking you must not strike them; even if a pedestrian is crossing illegally. You must be extra careful if you are driving in very congested areas including Downtown, school zones and in places where special events are being held. A car can be a deadly weapon.

#3 No Drunk Driving

As you well know, driving drunk is like “Russian Roulette”. If you have a drinking problem, don’t drink. If you are drunk, in other words, your body is intoxicated with alcohol and it affects your mental and physical abilities, don’t drive! Stay where you are until you are no longer drunk, call a family or a friend to drive you home or take a taxi.

#4 Cell Phones & Makeup

I know we cannot live without our cells: phone calls, text messages, emails and Internet access. Cell phones are great; we can do business, stay in touch with friends and family and, have access to additional information as we need it. However, we can be distracted and cause an accident. If you are going to use your cell phone while driving, safe driving is the most important thing. You may want to consider using an earpiece or speaker phone. Putting on makeup while driving is also very dangerous, it is impossible to look at the mirror and the road at the same time. In case you have no other choice, wait until you reach a red light.

# 5 Parking Politeness

Parking areas may be one of the most dangerous places when you own a car. Someone may steal the parking space you have been waiting for, someone may scratch or crash into your car, others may swing their door and dent your car and, there are those that express their anger by keying your car. None of these are acceptable; treat others and their cars as you would like them to treat you and your car.

#6 Be Courteous

The road is like the “common areas in a community”, all of us have the right to use it but we must be good neighbors. It is courteous to say: “good morning, good evening and nice to meet you”. Even though we are in separate cars we can be courteous by: letting someone turn into your lane, not abusing the horn by actually waiting until the light is green if the driver ahead of you does not move forward, not giving them a nasty sign or cursing at them for making a mistake (we all make mistakes). If someone is driving very slowly, do not tailgate them; just pass them in a cautious and respectful manner. Be gracious while on the road.

Junior had just received his brand new driver’s license. The family goes out to the driveway and climbs into the car, where he is going to take them for a ride for the first time. Dad immediately heads for the back seat, directly behind the new driver. “I'll bet you're back there to get a change of scenery after all those months of sitting in the front passenger seat teaching me how to drive”, says the beaming boy to his dad. The father said: “Nope! I'm going to sit here and kick the back of your seat as you drive, just like you've been doing to me all these years."

Be a good driver and say a quick prayer before you drive away!

#3 No Maneje Borracho

Tips for Back to School!

“Point your kids in the right direction when they're old they won't be lost”(Proverbs 22:6)*

Summer vacations are over; it is time for children and youth to go back to school. Some parents are happy, others are sad and, still others are nervous, as it may be the first time they are away from their children. María and I have three children, ages 27, 25, and 24 and a 5 year old grandchild. We know a bit about transitioning back to school. Let me share 6 tips to remind you of things you should do during this time.

#1 Positive First Week
The first days back to school can be a bit scary for some children and youth: Who will be my teacher and will he/she be nice? Will my friends be in my new class? Will the bully or bad boy/girl be in my new class? Will I like the classroom? Will I like my new school? Try to calm their fears and assure them that whatever they may face, you will be there to help them, and they will be fine. Ask them to share every experience with you (good or bad) and, reassure them they will have the best school year they have ever had!

#2 Backpacks and Backs
Backpacks can be quite heavy with all the books to carry. Please choose the correct backpack: double strap, not overly large to make sure they do not carry more than what they need. Instruct them on how to lift, place and carry it. It is a well known fact that backpacks can hurt children’s backs; consider purchasing rolling backpacks.

#3 Leaving and Returning from School
The goal is to send them to school and to get them back home safe. If you drive your child to school: leave on time, buckle-up, drive carefully and pick-them-up on time. If he/she will take the bus, make sure they are certain of the morning and afternoon pick up schedules, to stay seated inside the bus, and take all of their belongings. If they walk, bike, skateboard or drive to school, remind your child of the rules and extra safety measures during the commute.

#4 Feed the Body & the Mind
School lunch may not be the best but it is free: it will not cost you money or time to prepare. If you have the option, prepare lunch for your child or supplement it with healthy snacks. Food is the fuel our body and minds use to keep us going, low octane gas has less power than high octane – it will cost more but it will produce better results. There is plenty of information on healthy foods and snacks on the internet, so take time to feed your child well.

#5 Homework and Free Time
As you know, every child has homework. Talk to your child and establish their homework time when it will be good for both of you. They will most likely need your help. That means mom, dad or both, and the child will need to turn the TV off and do homework. Your child also needs free time to play, exercise, relax, fun and time to relate with peers is part of life.

#6 Time for Bed
I know that most of us enjoy watching a favorite program, talking on the phone, playing video games. Children and youth especially want these when it’s time to go to sleep. However, if they do not sleep the right amount of hours, their body and minds will not recuperate and recharge for the next day. For the sake of your son and/or daughter, make them go to bed! Some people are night owls and some are roosters – some like to stay up late and others rise early. Regardless, they need sufficient sleep.

I know that raising children is hard work, at times very frustrating and always, time consuming. But, I would like to leave you with these words from the Bible: “Don't you see that children are God’s best gift? The fruit of the womb His generous legacy?” (Psalm 127:3)*. Both María and I feel privileged and honored to be the parents of Neri, Isaac and Rebeca; and now the grandparents of Annalie. They are truly our best gifts from God!

Vacations are from God!

“Exhausted, he fell asleep under the lone broom bush….He ate the meal and went back to sleep” (1 Kings 19)*

The man that was in need of all that sleep was the Prophet Elijah. He was a busy man: having faced some heavy challenges and having seen great success, was now facing additional tasks. Elijah felt stressed-out and in real need to getaway for a while.

Vacations are optional but God knows we need them! I know that many of you are thinking: “I don’t have the time or the finances to take vacations”. The economy is not doing well and you need to work additional hours, you also want to make sure you can earn as much money as possible and, finally you want to show your employer that you are willing to sacrifice during this hard economic time. I want to congratulate you for being an excellent person and employee. However, I would like to convince you, as well as myself, that vacations are a necessary investment that will reap benefits.
#1 Physical Benefits
Our bodies need rest on a daily basis. God has created the body to heal itself as it rests; it’s like shutting down and restarting your computer when it freezes because of an overload of information. Not only do we need daily rest but also more prolonged rest times – a vacation. Take as much time as you can: a weekend, a week or more to shut down and restart fully charged.

#2 Emotional Benefits
Work is stressful; you have to face all kinds of daily tasks, goals, difficulties and interrelation problems. We can become very emotionally stressed, even burned out. A vacation will allow for emotional healing.

#3 Cognitive Benefits
Our minds also feel the stress. It seems that at times our creativity and cognitive capabilities are being attacked by a “computer virus” and we are in slow mode. Rest and relaxation gives our brains a time to recharge and recoup a few neurons to increase our mental capabilities.

#4 Relation Benefits
Relations are part of our lives; whether at home, work or elsewhere, they can get better or worse. At times, when you are not getting along with someone at work, a bit of distance may help heal the relationship. In other situations, when we have not spent enough time with family and friends, we need this additional time to regain lost moments.

#5 Spiritual Benefits
There are people that need a spiritual break – retreats. Vacation times can also be a time to catch-up with God. Honestly, God does not need vacations. He has not gone anywhere nor missed out on anything in our lives, but we that have missed out on Him. A few days of rest and you will probably enjoy sharing a bit more time with God.

* The Message

Comió y bebió, y volvió a acostarse” (1 Reyes 19)*

Nuestros cuerpos necesitan descanso diario.

Making Your Marriage Work!

“Your breasts are like fawns…You're beautiful from head to toe, my dear love, beautiful beyond compare, absolutely flawless” (Song of Solomon 4)*

“He's one in a million…There's no one quite like him!...Fine muscles ripple beneath his skin…That's my lover, that's my man” (Song of Solomon 5)*

Marriage is a great gift God created for most people and, it may be the most important earthly relationship we have. Like most good things, it takes effort to make it work. If you purchase your dream car or home, you need to maintain it properly otherwise it will become a nightmare.
María and I have been together for 35 years, 5 years of dating + 30 years of marriage. I can say that we are trying to follow the advice of Mrs. Ruth Graham. Someone once asked her if she ever thought about divorce and she said, “No, I've never thought of divorce in all these 35 years of marriage, but,” she said, “I did think of murder a few times”. Dr. and Mrs. Graham were married for 63 years! Let me share five insights on making your marriage work:

#1 Commit
The word commitment means “the state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action or to another person or persons.” Stick to the course of action – stay married! This does not mean that the “D” word is not an option but if both of you have committed to the marriage, it will be the last option.

#2 Communicate
Honestly, María talks so much that sometimes it drives me crazy! In all fairness, I drive her crazy by not talking enough. When women talk, it’s usually like a totally open water faucet. When men talk, it’s usually like a drip. We need to find time to talk and share whatever is in our mind and heart. Use every possible manner to communicate: face to face, text messages, phones calls, emails and handwritten notes.

#3 Respectfulness
When a couple begins to disrespect each other, ie., cursing, hitting, sleeping in separate rooms, packing and leaving, etc., the “sacredness of the relationship” is damaged. It’s like opening the gates of hell. All hell will break loose!

#4 Romance
Romance is a love affair; it’s an ardent emotional attachment or involvement between people. Romance is the kind of thing that you did prior to getting married and that hopefully, you still do. Ask your spouse what kind of things she or he finds romantic. Generally, men enjoy romance but women have greater fantasies about it.

#5 Sex
Sex is like a delicious dessert after a great meal of romance. If sex would not be such an important part of our lives, we would not be thinking and enjoying it so much. Sex is a multimillion dollar industry: enhancement drugs, creams, toys, movies, wardrobes, getaways, instructional materials from the traditional styles to Kama Sutra, seminars, etc. Generally, women enjoy sex but men have greater fantasies about it. Let’s be honest: wild, exciting and hot sex is lots of fun!

You have probably heard the phrase “marriages are made in heaven”. Assuming this is true, then “we need to properly maintain them on earth.” Your marriage will only last as much as you want. Cars normally have 36 months and 36,000 miles guarantee. But that guarantee is only good if you properly maintain your car. Do you best to make your marriage work!
