6 Keys to Defeat Discouragement

“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again—rejoice! Let everyone see that you are considerate in all you do. Remember, the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:4-7)*

Discouragement is like a virus, it comes and it goes. In life everyone gets discourage, sometimes for a short period and other times for a long one. There are many times that I have also been discouraged. During times of discouragement it seems like “white things look gray” and “gray things look dark and gloomy”. And as you probably heard: “the light at the end of the tunnel is not the tunnel exit but the train entering the tunnel.” The good news is that we can do our part to overcome discouragement and we can request help from Above. Let me share 6 keys to defeat discouragement.

#1 More Joy
Laughter is known to alleviate stress, release good things to the body and the brain; even doctors recommend “laugher therapy”. When we are discouraged it seems almost impossible to laugh and have fun. But that is the time when we need it the most! It has to be good when God recommends it. You may want to watch a real funny movie or enjoy some stand-up comedy show. Perhaps a bit of partying with your family and friends may help heal your body and mind.

#2 More Kindness
Discouragement leads to irritability – we get upset faster and more often than normal. The problem with this situation is we upset people, and in turn they will get angry at us. This will bring about additional problems that lead to more discouragement.

#3 Less Affliction
Less affliction means: stop worrying so much. I know that whatever is discouraging you is in your heart, mind and soul. If you have not placed it in God’s hands, go ahead and do it. If you have already done this, leave it in His hands. Trust God. He may not answer you immediately but you can be sure God has heard you and He is involved.

#4 More Petitions
As children we were often told: “don’t ask for so much”. Since we have limited resources and knowledge we place a limit on “how many” requests we accept. God does not have this problem: go ahead, ask and let Him make the final decision on what, when and how He will grant you your requests. You may receive the answer you have been waiting for.

#5 More Praise
Everyone likes to be thanked. When we say “thank you”, it is because someone has done something good to us or for us. The more we say “thank you”, the more we remember how much people love us and how blessed we have been throughout our lives. It lifts our mind, soul and spirit! God also likes to be appreciated, include Him as you give praise and thanksgiving.

#6 More Peace
Did you notice that the Bible verse mentions that we will “experience God’s peace?” Peace is serenity and tranquility. As we do our part, apply the first five keys to defeat discouragement, God will grant us the 6th, His peace. Whatever you are currently facing, do not lose hope. May you be encouraged and blessed. May God’s peace bring serenity and success!

Celebrating Your Birthday!

“His sons used to go and feast in the house of each on his day (birthday) in turn, and they invited their three sisters to eat and drink with them” (Job 1:4)*

It is your birthday! Every year you add one more. I just had one and turned %^ years young. There is no need to reveal my age; as young people say today, “it is too much information”. Everyone had a great time at my B-day, you can see the PICS on my Facebook (Rev. Pedro A. Martínez).

Buddhism and Christianity celebrate the birth of our founders and leaders. Christmas is a special time of the year as many of us celebrate Jesus’ birthday! Judaism seems to place emphasis on a particular year: bar mitzvah (13-years-old boys) or bat mitzvah (12-years-old girls). It is a celebration of religious maturity. Others, like the Jehovah’s Witnesses, see birthdays as a pagan ritual and do not celebrate them. Birthdays are celebrated today in many countries and with various cultural customs. Let me share with you five reasons why I believe you should celebrate your birthday.

1. Remembering Your Day
Your birthday is a Memorial Day Celebration. It is the day to celebrate that wonderful and historic event of your coming into the world. We celebrate/remember other special events: weddings, national holidays and religious holidays. Your birthday is your special day; God allowed you to be born on that day and that is a wonderful reason for a celebration!

2. Receiving Gifts
A gift is one of the ways we understand we are loved. When someone gives you a gift, you feel special because someone has taken the time to purchase it for you. As much as I enjoy giving, I also enjoy receiving; it makes me feel special! Birthdays may be a time to receive surprise gifts and even “special ordered” gifts (those you tell the person exactly what you want). Gifts are material demonstrations that we are loved.

3. Rejoicing and Party
I had a blast on my birthday! My first celebration was on Friday morning during a TV show. They sang happy birthday and we had some cake. That Friday night I had a birthday party in a local Pizzeria/Club. Dozens of my relatives and friends were there to listen to music, dance, drink, and take pictures. We had lots of fun!

4. Relaxing and Downtime
Birthdays are no longer “birthdays” but “birthday weekends”. After the party comes the relaxing and downtime celebration with family. Sunday after church we celebrated in a local restaurant, a nice quiet family lunch. It is a great honor to celebrate your birthday with those people you love the most: grandparents, parents, spouse, children, in-laws, grandchildren, aunts and uncles.

5. Restrained Revelry
The word “revelry” means: unrestrained merrymaking and noisy festivity. I suggest that you celebrate your birthday with “restrained revelry”. Enjoy your birthday to the fullest: eat, drink, dance, party with family and friends. Don’t go crazy and do something foolish. Make sure you get sufficient rest, eat some healthy meals, drink plenty of water and, drink responsibly so your celebration will not turn into a catastrophe. Happy Birthday!

*Amplified Bible

Pedro A. Martínez).

Me cantaron feliz cumpleaños y comimos pastel.

Watch your mouth!

“Careful words make for a careful life; careless talk may ruin everything” (Proverbs 13:3)*

Last week as President Barack Obama was addressing our Nation and I assume many Nations around the world, we heard the scream: “You lie!” These are the words of South Carolina Rep. Joe Wilson. Last night while appearing on 'The View,' Taylor Swift was prompted to talk about the VMAs when Kanye West interrupted her acceptance speech to tell the world that Beyonce's video was better than hers. Since then, Rep. Joe Wilson has apologized to President Barack Obama and Kanye West to Taylor Swift.

The reality is, once we say it, we can’t take it back. We can say we are sorry, we can ask for forgiveness, but the truth is we have already we expressed what was on our mind and heart. What we say can hurt people and get us into trouble. Since we are ALL guilty of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time, let me share nine tips on how to watch our mouth:

1. Do I have my facts correct?
The first thing you should do is ask yourself, do I know the facts? Is this second hand information or a possible rumor? Did I hear the facts correctly? Many times we speak based on rumors and lies we have been told or statements we have misunderstood.

2. What will I say?
Now that I got my facts “correct”, what do I want to tell this person? Think before you speak. What do I want to say? Rehearse it in your mind or write it before you say it.

3. What is my purpose in saying this?
My purpose for responding may vary: Do I want to clear-up something? Do I want to up-lift and honor the person? Do I want to defend my views, myself or someone else? Do I want to go on the attack – be aggressive and assertive? Do I want to verbally abuse and humiliate the person?

4. How will it affect that person?
Now I need to know how this person will be affected by my words: Will the person learn something? Will the person be uplifted or destroyed? Will the person accept, reject or react to my words? When we speak we should consider the effect and reaction of our words upon another person.

5. How will this be understood by others?
Both Rep. Joe Wilson and Kanye West spoke and millions of people heard their words. What did people think about their words? Even if Rep. Wilson and Mr. West spoke the truth, will the people believe it was correct? I am not saying we should base our words solely on other people’s reaction. I am saying that it is wise to take into consideration what others may think before you speak.

6. Is this the best place to say this?
Both Rep. Wilson and Mr. West spoke in very public places: Rep. Wilson before Congress, Mr. West before the MTV Video Music Awards, and both before the multitudes watching live broadcast. Before we speak we should consider: Is this a private or a public matter? Who needs to hear my comment: this person or the whole world?

7. Can this wait?
There is a moment for everything; is this the right time to say it? It may be the right place, but is it the right time? Speaking at the wrong time may have a shock effect but it will still be wrong. Once again, choose the right moment to speak.

8. Remember, once said, you can’t take it back!
Before you speak out remember that words are like water poured in the sand, you will never be able to take them back. You will have to deal and live with whatever you say, whether you regret it or are proud of it. Excuses such as, “I did not mean it or it slipped my tongue or I spoke without thinking”, will not suffice. You said it and now everyone will believe you meant it!

9. Say it as clear and concise as you can!
If, after you have considered these steps, you still feel you need to speak out, go ahead and say it. Be as clear and concise as possible. You want the person or the people to understand exactly what you are saying. If you fumble your words or speak too much, you will not get your message across. You will be misunderstood and tuned-off. In which case you have just wasted you time. Your words did not hit the mark!

We have all said things that we are ashamed of and wished we could take back. Consider these nine tips before you speak, and may God give us the wisdom to speak the truth in love!

*The Message

¡Cuida tus palabras!

2. ¿Qué voy a decir?

¿Aceptará, rechazará o reaccionará a mis palabras?

9.11.2009 >>> Eight Years Later!

“Those of our people who have died will live again! Their bodies will come back to life. All those sleeping in their graves will wake up and sing for joy. As the sparkling dew refreshes the earth, so the Lord will revive those who have long been dead” (Isaiah 26:19)

This morning while watching CNN there was breaking news, U.S. Coast Guards followed and fired upon suspicious boats on the Potomac River in Washington D.C. Could there have been another possible terrorist attack this morning? As I remembered the 8th Anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks upon our Nation, the memories of 9.11.2001 flooded my mind as a river overflows into a city. That morning I was shaving and listening to CNN when all of a sudden I heard that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers in NYC. I screamed to María, my wife, “Come see this, there is something going on in NYC!” Today I want to share four lessons to remember.

#1 Virginity Has Ended
The loss of virginity both for male and female is a once in a lifetime experience; once you loose it, it’s gone. As a Nation, we lost our virginity on that Day. We were raped, left confused and, in deep pain by the terrorist attacks we experienced.

#2 Victims Then And Now
On that Day 2,993 people, including the terrorists, died in all of the attacks including nationals of over 90 countries. All those victims have families: mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. These are the living victims; those that live with the loss of their loved ones. I send my condolences to and prayers for them.

#3 Vigilance Evermore
As a great Nation that we are, we have learned from our weaknesses. As muscles grow after you have damaged the tissues, our Nation has grown stronger against terrorist attacks. Praise God we have had no attacks of that catastrophic nature since that Day!

#4 Victory From Defeat
On the 8th Anniversary we can agree that: “victory is won not in miles but in inches”. Terrorists that sought to destroy our freedom, confidence, will, compassion, persistence and unity failed! We have grown as a Nation. May God continue to bless the United States of America!

A Man’s Ideal Woman?

“You're so beautiful, my darling, so beautiful, and your dove eyes are veiled. By your hair as it flows and shimmers, like a flock of goats in the distance streaming down a hillside in the sunshine. Your smile is generous and full expressive and strong and clean. Your lips are jewel red, your mouth elegant and inviting, your veiled cheeks soft and radiant. The smooth, lithe lines of your neck command notice all heads turn in awe and admiration! Your breasts are like fawns, twins of a gazelle, grazing among the first spring flowers” (Song of Solomon 4:-5)*

As we read the words of this man, we can sense his love, his attraction, the poetry used to express his erotic passion for his woman. King Solomon describes his woman with great detail: eyes, hair, smile, lips, mouth, cheeks, neck and breasts. Like most men, we are attracted by the physical beauty of women. It is true that other wonderful characteristics are also important and attractive to us.

There are many men that are totally dissatisfied with their wife or girlfriend. Some men find them boring and unattractive, among other things. They feel frustrated and angry in their relationship. Let’s take a look at five categories of women: what men like and dislike about them? What women can learn and apply to their lives? What men can encourage their wife or girlfriend to bring into or back into the relationship? Once again since I will be speaking about sexual intercourse, let me clarify that I believe intercourse should be within the context of marriage.

The Bad Girl
Bad Girls are hot! They are sexy, beautiful, and flashy. They flaunt their goods, like to have fun, party, drink, smoke cigars, get tattoos, go to the bars to watch the game and, they like sexual intercourse. Bad girls like the attention, the one night stands, and guys like them. But normally they are egocentric, spoiled and undependable. When men seek a life time partner, they prefer someone a bit less wild.

The Good Girl
Good Girls are just the type of woman your mother would love. She is polite and gets along with family and friends. She is someone that understands him, shares common interests, is bright, and may even enjoy watching sports. But they tend to be boring, predictable and not the most satisfying during sexual intercourse.

The Gorgeous Girl
Gorgeous Girls are the model type – full of grace, beauty and confidence. She lives daily as she was on the runway or on stage for a competition: lights, cameras and Miss Gorgeous Girl. Men like their beauty, glamour, confidence and, having sexual intercourse with a “model” is a fantasy fulfilled. But Gorgeous Girls are also a bit intimidating to some men, bratty, proud and manipulative.

The Servant Girl
Servant Girls like to serve. They are submissive and they: clean, cook, wash and serve their men. Servant Girls like men to be the strong leaders and they follow whatever their man says. Men like their willingness to serve them because they feel like the king of their home. But they are not a challenge and, tend to be unattractive, insecure and horrible during sexual intercourse.

The Married Girl
Married Girls may be seen from two angles. The stable housewife, caring, good mother, fairly good at sexual intercourse but lack emotional connection with their spouse. Married Girls like the security of their marriage but seek the emotional connection and/or sexual pleasure they lack at home. They can also make great lovers since one of the things they seek is good sex and men like good sex without commitment. However, any lover that would fall in love with them will get their heart broken and, they will never totally satisfy their husband or their lover.

I believe that we can learn from these five categories of women and apply good qualities. What is a man’s ideal woman? A woman that is sexy, likes to have fun, is well dressed, smells sweet, can be wild but also mild, secure, trustworthy, not manipulative, not a whiner, glamorous and very erotic. In addition, she can make sure the basic things of the home (food, clean, wash) are fulfilled. Some women with children tend to forget they also have a husband; it seems that their whole life revolves around motherhood. Parenting is important, but great marriage is just as important. A woman lacking in these qualities pleasing to men should be willing to learn and change. Any husband or boyfriend that feels that their wife or girlfriend is lacking in a particular quality that he desires should be willing to share how they feel.

A woman’s ideal man?

“Restless in bed and sleepless through the night, I longed for my lover. I wanted him desperately” (Song of Solomon 3:1)*

The words of Song of Solomon are very romantic; you can sense the love and hushed erotic words between these lovers. She has a deep emotional connection with him; she feels appreciated, beautiful, feminine, secure, sexy and satisfied with her man. I would venture to say, she expresses feelings that any woman in the 21st Century would express. She has found the man of her dreams.

Many women do not feel like the woman in the Book of Song of Solomon. Many feel frustrated, bored, angry and discouraged with their husband, boyfriend or significant other. Let’s take a look at five categories of men: What women like and dislike about them, how a woman can ask her husband to be the best he can be and how men can take the best of each and apply it to their life and relationship with their wife. Since I will be referring to sexual intercourse, let me clarify that I believe intercourse should be within the context of marriage.

#1 The Bad Boy
Bad Boys are exciting; they normally make a woman feel sexy and are great for intercourse. But they tend to be undependable and womanizers. Women do not feel appreciated nor do they find an emotional connection.

#2 The Good Boy
Good Boys have good qualities for marriage. They make women feel good by making an emotional connection but, they tend to be nerdy and not manly enough. Women do not feel desirable, sexy and, they are generally not sexually turned on by this type of man.

#3 The Emotionally Closed Boy
Emotionally Closed Boys would be great candidates for marriage: a gentleman that appreciates a woman, manly and great for intercourse. But there is one problem – they are emotionally closed. These men speak very little, share at a very superficial level and women can’t connect with them.

#4 The Sex Boy
Sex Boys are men that serve one main purpose – sex. They are more commonly referred to as “Booty Call”. They are available whenever desired for “services”; there is no commitment and no tricky situation. There is a friendship but no deep emotional connection. They are not the ideal man.

#5 The Married Boy
Married Boys may be seen from two different angles. They can be great husbands, stable life long partners, good fathers and wonderful lovers, connecting emotionally and sexually. Married Boys can also connect emotionally with women other than their wives and can make them feel special and sexy, and make great lovers. These men generally have no plans of divorcing their wives and women do not feel totally special – women that have an affair with them will always be “the other woman”. Therefore, Married Boys may not fully satisfy either their wives or their lovers.

Very likely women that have just read this can relate these categories to their husbands, boyfriends or men they have previously met or currently know. In my opinion, the goal would be to learn from all five categories, extract the good qualities of each and bring it to your marriage. What is a woman’s ideal man? A man that she can connect with emotionally, one that makes her feel like a princess, stable, secure, manly, well groomed, well dressed, smells good, generally in a good mood and can sexually satisfy her to the utmost. My advice to women that feel their husbands lack in any key area: let your husband know just how you feel and how he can do better. To men that know they lack in any of these areas: be willing to change and be the best man to your woman. Next week, I will speak about the “other side of the coin” – What is a man’s ideal woman?
