Defeating Your Depression!

“When Elijah heard this, he was afraid and ran for his life...Then Elijah walked for a whole day into the desert. He sat down under a bush and asked to die. "I have had enough, Lord," he prayed” (1 Kings 19:3-4)*

The sad reality is that depression affects most of us; it may be for a very short time or for a lifetime. I believe that we can do our part in defeating our depression. Take this quick test and determine if you are currently depressed. Read the following and mentally check (√) if you have any of these symptoms: emotional ups and downs □, do not find pleasure in anything □, profound feeling of guilt □, hopelessness, loneliness □, lack of energy, sleep too much or insomnia □, compulsive eating □, headaches and pain in your body □, difficulty coping and communicating □, neglecting some responsibilities □, desiring death or suicidal thoughts □. If you have mentally checked (√) a few of these you are currently depressed.

The good news is that there is help. To be totally honest, if you want to defeat your depression, you must take the first step! Let me share with you a few keys to defeating your depression.

1. Suicidal Thoughts? 911
If you are having suicidal thoughts, you need to find help RIGHT NOW! Your life depends on it. You are worthy and valuable as a human being. Depending on how close you are to actually carrying through with your suicidal thoughts, you may need to call 911, see a psychiatrist tomorrow or make an appointment ASAP. Do not take your life, there is hope for you. Call NOW!

2. Medical And Medicine
When we have need for legal counsel, we seek an attorney. When we have physical problems, we go see a doctor. When we have an emotional problem, we need a physician for the mind and the emotions. Psychiatrists, physiologists and therapists are our friends. It is not a waste of time and money; it is an investment in your health. Go ahead and make an appointment with a mental health expert!

3. Find A Friend
Feelings of loneliness are horrible. You have the power to change it! Call a friend and share. You may want to invite a friend or friends for coffee, lunch or dinner. You may want to go out with your friends to a fun activity: movies, a game, a comedy show, a concert, to watch Monday Night Football or go to a party or a night club. Friends are people we like, appreciate and trust. They can be a blessing to us during times of depression. Call one friend ASAP.

4. For The Mind
You have heard the saying: “when the mind goes, everything follows”. During times of depression we repeat and rehearse the same negative and gloomy thoughts in our minds. You need to begin to take control of your thoughts and place them within the context of reality. Not everything is bad in your life; I am sure you have blessings to be thankful about. You may want to read a book, hear an audio on the topic of positive thinking, attend a conference on taking control of your thought life or, hear music that will inspire and uplift you. Change your negative mind-set! This alone may lead you out of depression. As I said before “everything follows”.

5. For The Body
You may be feeling tired, have no desire to go out and be overeating. Since the body and mind are connected, your depression is having a negative effect on your body. You can also change that! Begin to exercise: walk around your house or a park, enroll in a spinning or a yoga class, go swimming, play a sport, go hiking, skating or join a gym. Move your body. It will feel sore but it will feel good. You will have more energy, reduce your body fat, lose weight and feel great!

6. For The Soul
As you know, I believe in a Higher Power; I believe in God. Prayer is communication with God. There is sufficient scientific evidence to prove that prayers are answered, things change and miracles occur. Whatever you are going through and whatever has made you depressed, God knows about it, cares about you and deeply loves you. He may be waiting to hear from you. Right now send God a quick prayer, say this: “God, I want you to bring me out of this depression and give me strength to do my part to bring myself out of this depression. Amen!”

This was also my prayer on your behalf. May your depression turn into joy and may your sorrow turn into dancing!

5 Tips On Accepting An Award!

“It is not good to eat too much honey, nor does it bring you honor to brag about yourself” (Proverbs 25:27)*

Honey has a long history and it is used in many cultures. “Eva Crane's, The Archaeology of Beekeeping, states that humans began hunting for honey at least 10,000 years ago” (Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia). Honey tastes good, it’s nutritious, does not spoil easily, helps the healing of the colon and the throat, is a great sweetener and, good for baking and cooking purposes. Many religions speak well about honey: the Bible and the Qumran. It also plays an important role in a Buddhist festival. Honey is good so long as we do not eat too much of it. It will make us fat and sick.

What we say about honey may also apply to honor: “It is good but too much will make our head fat and our egos sick”. Honor is a “high respect, as that shown for special merit”. We are told in the Bible to “honor” our parents, leaders, and anyone that merits honor. Giving honor to someone is wonderful. It means that the person receiving honor has done a good thing for another person, an organization, a City, a Nation or the World. Recently President Barack Obama was greatly honored having been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize! Let me share with you five tips on how to accept an award.

1. Be Thankful For The Honor
One of the best things we can do in life is to say ‘thank you’. If you are being honored, the proper response is to be grateful and to express it verbally. Don’t assume that the person knows you are grateful, be explicit about it. To act like it is not important to be honored is to imply that what you did was not an honorable thing. Go ahead and communicate by all possible means that you are thankful!

2. Share The Honor
In life we are mentored, helped and are successful because others played a role in our lives. If someone would not have built the car you drive, sold it to you and performed the maintenance on it, you would not have a car. You either purchased it or leased it, but others played a role in your car. The respectable response should be to give honor to those that helped you receive honor.

3. Benefit From The Honor
There is nothing wrong in benefiting from the honor. I believe that proper benefits would be used on behalf of people, an organization, a City, a Nation or even the World. If there is publicity, power, funds or prestige from the honor you will receive, then by-all-means utilize it for the common good; certainly not for your self-seeking financial gain, glory or power.

4. Be Humble For The Honor
Humility is being modest, avoiding arrogance and self-importance. True, you are being recognized by your peers and others, and it is justified to feel good and “properly proud” of your accomplishments. To be humble does NOT mean you need to look like you are depressed. Be kind with others and unassuming, people will respect you and honor you even more.

5. Seek Good Not The Glory
As I said at the beginning, being honored is a good thing. Glory, meaning praise and admiration, may be wonderful as long as you do not seek it. If glory finds you, then it was because you have sought to do well. Seek the good of humanity, to serve, to be a blessing to others and glory will follow you. But if you ever seek glory first, eventually it will consume you and turn you into an egocentric, self-seeking human. Anyone that their focus is seeking glory is in danger to himself and to society. The Bible says: “Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12)*. As you seek to do good in this world, may your peers honor you and may God grant you a spirit of humility for His glory!

5. Busque El Servir No La Gloria

5 Keys To Achieve New Projects!

“Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3)*

Do you have any new plans or projects for the near future? Many of us have something that we would like to accomplish; it may be related to our career, school, business or family. In order to make your dreams a reality you will need to get started. In the process you will probably need to take risks and hopefully, with God’s help, you will make your dreams come true. Let me share five keys to achieve new projects.

1. Network With Others
Networking is the ability to work with others that have the same or similar visions and goals. Whatever your dream is, there are other people and organizations that may have the same or similar projects. You can benefit from each other as you share goals, ideas, resources and even frustrations. There is strength in unity!

2. Continue Whatever Is Working
You are very likely doing some good things. I suggest you continue with anything that is currently working. Since you are starting a “new project”, don’t trash what is working at this time. Continue with whatever is working well: business, career, studies, or relationships with family and friends. Then see if your new project begins to unfold and to prosper.

3. Expect Closed Doors
I recently went to a business expecting it to be open. As I pulled the door, it was locked. It happens to all of us; we are expecting “open doors” and we are surprised when we find “closed doors”. I know it is frustrating when things we expect do not go our way. As you may already know “stuff happens” but it may not be all bad. I believe that God closes some doors because it may not be the right time or the right place for us. This does NOT mean your project is not worthy; it may just be delayed or rearranged a bit.

4. Wait For Open Doors
The opposite also happens. Just this week I called my optometrist three times and the line was busy. I was desperate to have my reading glasses repaired so I headed to her office hoping they were open. When I arrived, there were no parked cars; I thought there was no one in the office. I was surprised to find the door unlocked and open for business. As we pursue new projects, we will be astonished that some doors are open. When you encounter open doors move forward with your plans. God opens doors we do not expect, if we are flexible and ready they are key to our projects.

5. Green Means Go!
When the light turns green step on it and go! At times we may be on the “red light” for a while. We may feel that we are never going to move forward with our project, that we have reached the end of the road. But when you get the “green light” don’t look back, don’t wait another minute. This is NOT the time to second guess yourself. This is your chance; go make your vision and your projects a reality!

John Hoyer Updike, an American novelist, poet, short story writer, art critic once said: “Dreams come true; without that possibility, nature would not incite us to have them”. I am convinced that at least some dreams come from God. If you have a project in your heart it may be divinely inspired. Remember the five keys. May God place His dreams in your heart and may you have the courage to pursue them.

¡5 Claves Para Alcanzar Nuevos Proyectos!
