“The lazy will not get what they want, but those who work hard will” (Proverbs 13:4)*
In the last year our economy and most of the world’s economy has suffered an economic downturn. Unfortunately many have lost jobs, investments and, their savings. If you still have your job you can say, “Praise the Lord!” We are seeing small signs that our economy is beginning to pick up; but, more than ever, we need to use our finances very wisely and be the best employee possible. Here are eight simple and practical principles that you may implement to succeed during this present economic cycle:
1) Reduce unnecessary expenses.
Before you spend a penny, ask yourself: “Do I need to purchase this? Can I really afford it? Is this a need or a want?” We all know that the key to having money is ‘not how much I make’ but ‘how well I manage my money’. During a difficult economic period we need to cut back on unnecessary expenses.
2) Reduce your credit card debts & make payments on time.
Interest paid to credit card companies is probably the highest rate you pay on any debt. Try to pay your credit card debts as soon as possible. If you have difficulties controlling the use of credit cards, destroy all or most of them. Make sure you make all your payments on time; especially necessary items such as, rent, utilities and car payments.
3) Bankrupt? Reach an agreement ASAP with your debtor.
If you can’t pay your debts contact your debtors ASAP; before your debt goes to a collection company. Try to reach a settlement with your debtors. Most companies are willing to negotiate the amount of debt and the payments. Always make your car payment: you do not want to wake up in the morning and find it has been repossessed.
4) Be the best employee at your job.
Remember you are working for someone that expects you to do your job well. You are either an asset or a liability to your employer– the latter can get you fired or demoted. Go to work daily seeking to be the best employee possible.
5) Seek a better job without leaving your current job.
Continue to seek better job opportunities without leaving your current job. Once you find another job opportunity, investigate the benefits, the company’s financial security and, of course, the salary.
6) Seek additional income, but do not take dangerous risks.
If you have the time, seek to increase your income by taking on a part-time job or starting a small business on the side. Do not make dangerous investments with companies that promise you fast and easy money by investing in them.
7) Have credit available in case of emergency.
Be ready in case you have an emergency. Keep a “clean credit card” and, if you own a property, have an available line of credit.
8) Have a positive spirit.
Be thankful for your job and ask God to bless you as you go on to fulfill your responsibilities in life. Remember: “ask and you will receive.”
